In this critical overview of recent descriptivist trends in the semantics of proper names, I discuss the literature emerging from Burge 1973, and the recent versions of the view of names as ‘predicates’. I pay particular attention to their relationships with semantics, and I conclude with a skeptical note about their alleged incompatibility with the Direct Reference approach to names.
